The Different Types of Lures
By Aaron Guhl
There are a ton of different kinds of fishing lures out there today. It can be very intimidating as a beginner to get a grasp at what type of lure you should be using. This is why many beginners steer clear of using lures when just starting out. But, lures can be very effective at catching fish and learning which lure is the right one to use can really improve your fishing experience. Some lures are made for catching specific types of fish. Many fish prey on certain types of fish and there are lures that are made to imitate those fish. Another thing that you will want to consider is the type of water you will be fishing in. Lures come in all sorts of colors and generally you will want to use brighter colored lures in murky water and lures with more realistic colors and markings in clearer water. Also, some lures are designed to "swim" at a specific depth, so you will want to consider the depth of the water you are fishing as well. Now that you have things in mind such as color and depth, what type of lure should you use? Crankbaits are a very popular lure for fishing freshwater fish, whether that be trout, bass, panfish, salmon or pike. Crankbaits are a type of cast and retrieve lure. They are made with a lip on the front so that when they are retrieved, they dive down to a certain depth or swim up to a certain depth. It also creates a swimming action that imitates an injured fish. This really attracts fish in the area. Some crankbaits also make a noise. This is ideal for murky waters where the visibility isn't that great. It helps grab the attention of fish in the area that might not have otherwise seen the lure. There are also many types of plastic lures available such as jigs or spoons. A jig is just a fish or worm looking plastic bait with a hook at the tail end of it. These baits are retrieved and allow for easy hooking when a fish takes a bite. Spoons are a type of lure that when retrieved, the water flows over a spoon shaped plate that causes the lure to wiggle through the water. These are generally shiny lures so that when the sun hits the lure wiggling, it will attact a fish's attention. Some fish like to feed from the top of the water or on the surface of it. There are lures that can imitate bugs or surface crawling insects and flies. These lures are called poppers. The fisher needs to pull these lures in a fashion that imitates these prey to attract fish. These lures also can sometimes make noise to draw the attention of fish below. As you can see there are many types of fishing lures available. The best advice is to just try out different kinds and see what works best for you. No one says you can only use one. Pick up several different kinds and see which ones you have the best luck. It is also a good idea to have several different kinds of fishing lures for different situations. |
