Spincast Fishing Reels

By Aaron Guhl

We all remember the days of old when we all used spincast fishing reels, but in today's fishing world they aren't used nearly as much. Today's anglers use mostly baitcast and spinning reels. However, there are times when using a spincast reel is advantageous. Here are some quick tips as to when using a spincast reel might be the best option.

One great thing about spincast fishing reels is that there is a cover over the fishing line spool. This cover can help protect your fishing line from foreign objects that might otherwise have harmed the line had it been on a spinning or baitcast reel. This allows you to place your fishing rod on the ground without worrying so much about what harm may come to your line.

When should you use a spincast reel? Well fishing from the shoreline is one of the best uses for a spincast reel. Spincast reels allow for the same casting distances that a spinning reel would which allows you to get good long and accurate casts from it.

What should you know before purchasing a spincast fishing reel? There are some cheap and poorly made spincast reels out on the market today. The mantra, "you get what you pay for" comes into mind here. If you are serious about fishing, then you don't want to skimp on a fishing reel, especially if it is a spincast reel you are looking for.

A good spincast reel uses a ceramic pin to pickup the line from the spool. This is how you can tell whether or not you have a quality reel in your hand or just a poorly made kids reel. The drag mechanism on the reel is also important and a fishing reel that allows you to make very minor adjustments. Pull some line out from the reel before purchasing it to check to see how smoothly the line comes off the spool. The easier the line comes off of it, the longer your casts can be.

Many reels can come with line already supplied on them. This can many times indicate that it is a cheaper reel, but not always. Regardless though, if it does come with line already spooled, you will generally want to replace that line with a different line of better quality.

Fishing with a spincast reel can be very enjoyable. Hopefully these tips will help when looking for the right spincast reel for yourself.
