Organic Cotton Information

About organic cotton...
by: Aaron Guhl

For organic cotton, it all starts with the soil. There are strict standards for soil that is to be used for organic cotton. It must have been chemical free for at least 3 years. Compost is also used to ensure that the soil is fertile. Fertile land results in healthy and strong plants that can resist bugs, weeds and diseases better. Cotton plants require large quantities of nitrogen. Farmers have several methods for providing the organic cotton with the right amount of nitrogen. Chicken manure, vetch crops, or fava bean crops all help supply the organic cotton with nitrogen and all take the place of the synthetic fertilizers used with convention cotton farming.

Farmers also use natural predatory tactics to help keep pests away. They introduce natural predators into the environment that help prey on pests that feed on the cotton crop. Normally chemical sprays are used to help keep them at bay. Chemicals are also used to keep the land free of weeds, but with organic cotton the farmers use good old fashioned manual labor. Harvesting is also all done by hand or mechanical machine.

Come time for processing potato starch is used instead of harsh chemicals such as chlorine. Normally during the spinning process finishes and other additives added to the cotton as a last touch, but once again, to keep the process organic natural oils are used.

Being such an important fiber, it is important to make sure that it is kept in its most natural form. Cotton is a comfortable fiber and is very easily made into many different fabrics. When choosing clothing for babies, it is important to choose fabrics that don't have harsh chemicals that can irritate their skin. Organic cotton baby clothing is one of the only ways to go for many parents.
