3 Largemouth Bass Fishing Tips
By Aaron Guhl
I've often found that what works most often when fishing are usually the simplest methods. This holds especially true when fishing for largemouth bass. Here are 3 simple tips to try to increase your success when largemouth bass fishing. Avoid Using Fishing Line That is Too Heavy: All too often, people use a fishing line that is rated way to heavy for what they are fishing for. Using line that is too heavy can cause alarm to the fish who can sense it. A thinner and lighterweight fishing line is invisible to fish and will yield more strikes. The opposite holds true for heavier lines. The weight of the line is the amount of dead weight that the line can handle before breaking. So if you use a 12 pound line, then that line can hold 12 pounds of dead weight before breaking. But, that doesn't mean that you can't catch heavier fish than 12 pounds on a 12 pound line. Your rod and the drag on the reel can alleviate some of that weight and strain that is placed on the line itself. Also, how many 12 pound fish are you catching? It is generally best to use the lightest weight line you can get away with to generate more strike and catch more fish. If you find that your line ever breaks, then you can switch to a heavier one. Fish Can Smell Too! Largemouth bass have very acute senses of smell, believe it or not. You should usually rinse your hands with water before handling lures and avoid using scented soaps. This can transfer to your lures and securing them to your line and when used in the water, if your lure doesn't smell like food to the bass, then it won't strike. Convince the Bass That Your Lure is Food: This can be overlooked a lot of times when fishing for largemouth bass. Your lure needs to look as much like prey to largemouth bass as possible. Largemouth bass are predatory fish. They like to hunt and prey on weaker and smaller fish. If you can convince them that your lure is a wounded fish, then that will most certainly yield more strikes. No matter what type of lure you are using, use different actions with your rod to test out what works best to convince the largemouth bass that your lure is easy prey! Hopefully you will find these 3 largemouth bass fishing tips useful on your next fishing trip. |

I never realized that fish could smell the human touch on the lures. Good information. Frederick
I love the liquid fish attractants that spray on. It not only has smell but taste too. You can get all sorts of flavors with crayfish being mine.
